Oregon Waterfall

August 29, 2019 in Black and White Film, Nature, Nudes, Photo Sessions

This image turned out way more contrasty than I originally envisioned it to be. I should hardly be surprised as the lighting was pretty harsh. I got to this location far later into the day than I originally intended and the sun was blazing without hardly a cloud in the sky. It was one of those days where even just looking into the viewfinder one felt like your retinas were going to burn to a crisp from the harsh glare of the sun.

Despite that I’m actually really fond of this image and in some ways I like the harsh shadows and contrast that came out. There is something symmetrical about the way the shadows hug the figure and almost create some geometric shapes that pair nicely with the square frame. So I’m going to chalk this image up to the status of a happy accident and just be pleased with it the way it is.

In other news, I have no less than eighty nine scanned frames sitting on my desktop that need to be edited which means lots of new pictures to share. I’m hoping this weekend to have some time to just put on a record, drink some tea, and set myself to the tedious task of re-sizing, spotting out dust marks, and organizing scanned negative files. Believe it or not, but I look forward to the thought of having nothing but time on my hands to get things like this done.

Enjoying the nice natural light going on with this image. Not too bright and harsh, but pronounced enough to bring out the details and shapes in the frame on black and white film.

This is one of those images that should not have worked. It was incredibly hot out, and the light was far too harsh for my liking, but somehow we found a great little spot with some open shade and just a tiny little breeze.

I've been reconnecting with large format photography more and more, which has been quite challenging for me. It's kind of thrilling to fail, make adjustments, and then try again. It's infuriating at times too, which is all part of the fun.
