Photographed with a Hasselblad 500c/m and Kodak T-Max 400 film.

Dynamic Range With Film

June 04, 2019 in Black and White Film, Nudes, Photo Sessions

I was a little bit worried about how this photograph was going to turn out when I was exposing the image in the camera. The light values in this scene were all over the map. On the left side of the frame I had some very bright sun and on the right side of the frame I had some very deep shadow. The background had some pockets of very bright highlights as well and the steps were pretty much neutral between everything. Looking at the scene I asked the model to walk up the steps and it was my hope that the final image would get a nice healthy balance between extreme highlights and extreme shadows.

For the most part I think I succeeded.

This image was made down in California during a photo session with Mauvais, a person I very much hope to work with again someday. Every once in a while when photographing people you meet someone you just instantly click with and making photographs seems effortless. Mauvais was one of those people. Whenever that happens photography doesn’t even really seem like work and instead it is more like just hanging out with your friends fro the afternoon.

The image was made with the Hasselblad 500c/m and the standard 80mm f/2.8. At the time I was making this image I was thinking to myself that I wish I had a slightly wider focal length lens for the Hasselblad. Ultimately I’m happy with the way the image turned out but I’m still digging around for a wide angle lens at a decent price. I’m getting a little bored of the standard 80mm field of view and creatively speaking I tend to gravitate toward wider angles. Soon enough I suppose. Soon enough.

A little bit of infrared film on a bright and sunny day. I need to use infrared film stock more often. When the results turn out well it is quite satisfying.

A portrait with @hexy.lexi. It was a perfect overcast day for outdoor portraits, something I appreciate about winter and fall here in the Pacific Northwest.

This one goes back many years even though I just developed it yesterday. Sometimes having an enormous backlog of film I have yet to develop can bring back interesting moments in time.
